Development of biocompatible material with high mechanical properties and optimal degradation time for use in modern bioabsorbable cardiac stents

Dr Anna Jarzębska, Eng. from the Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences in January 2021 started the project LIDER XI funded by the National Centre for Research and Development. The project also involves the Laboratory of Plasticity under High Pressure, whose tasks will include the development of technology of high-pressure plastic deformation of materials, together with the analysis of their mechanical properties.
The project concerns the design of a material for bioabsorbable cardiac stents. This involves meeting a number of conditions such as high mechanical properties, optimal degradation rate and biocompatibility. The proposed new material based on zinc will meet the requirements thanks to the proper selection of the alloy composition and unique plastic processing in the form of hot extrusion and hydrostatic extrusion.

The material engineering methods applied will allow for detailed characterization of the material, contributing to the assessment of its suitability and development of a stent prototype. Implementation of such a stent will be a breakthrough in interventional cardiology and will affect the comfort of patients’ lives, eliminating complications associated with long-term contact of the implant with the tissue.
